What’s your current role and tell us about your career journey with VirginMediaO2?

I lead Compliance for Virgin Media O2. This includes both Ethics and Data Privacy, too.  I was previously the Compliance Director for O2, and have now been at the company in its various forms for 10 years! In addition to my role at Virgin Media O2, I am also a tutor at the International Compliance Association and am currently writing a Compliance leadership for the ICA in Singapore which is a new experience for me

Congrats on being nominated for the compliance office of the year award, what skills and behaviours make a great Head of Compliance?

Thanks, it’s all down to the hard work of the team who are superb at what they do. I think the skills needed are the ability to translate complex requirements in a clear way. These communication skills are required at all levels of the organisation. From stores to Exec team.  You also need to build a team which is diverse, curious, supportive, and has the confidence to call out behaviours and actions across the business not aligned with our values or regulatory obligations.

These skills are all really important in order to build awareness about Compliance and create a genuine compliance culture. I like to describe this as a culture where we’re all committed to doing the right thing.

Congrats on VirginMediaO2 being nominated for the compliance team of the year award, what makes a great compliance team?

All the above. I’m keen to build an inclusive and diverse team of ambitious and highly driven individuals aiming to support the business and ensure that we meet our regulatory obligations and continue to create an ethical culture. We’ve lots of work to do but I’m really proud of the progress made so far.

What advice do you have for young professionals getting into corporate compliance?

Compliance is great for those with a legal background, however, the most important skillset is the ability to communicate effectively and build a rapport across all levels of the business. Some but not all of the team have a legal background. It’s a career path definitely worth exploring. If you’re interested in this area or think you might be a good fit, I’d recommend following the International Compliance Association, Financial Conduct Authority, Information Commissioners Officer or Ofcom on LinkedIn. They always have good information. I’m of course around to have a chat too.

What have you enjoyed about working alongside the former VirginMedia team?

I love getting to know our Virgin Media colleagues and learning about their great products and services. One of my favourite days so far was spending a day with a Cable engineer which helped me to understand the great job their doing and the important role we play in people’s homes.

Prior to this, I studied Law at Manchester, Graduate Scheme at Deloitte, joined the Civil Service and then spent a few years at the Bank of Ireland before discovering telecoms."
